We are doing demos and getting close to debuting our new BigCommerce app. It will allow online stores that use the BigCommerce platform—and their customers—to show their commitment to sustainability.
With no cost to the store owner, the app will allow online consumers the option to make their shipping carbon-neutral. At checkout, a simple checkbox lets customers choose whether to pay a little extra (we'll tell them exactly how much) to green their order's shipping. They click the box, or not, and proceed with checkout.
Cloverly's API calculates the approximate carbon emissions that result from the shipping. It then compensates by avoiding, offsetting, or sequestering the same amount of carbon elsewhere in the environment.
Consumers are often surprised at how little it costs to make their shipping carbon-neutral—usually less than a dollar. If they do choose to click the checkbox, we give them the option to see exactly what instrument we used to green the shipping.
We try to match it geographically to their location. For a Pennsylvania customer, for example, we might use a carbon offset project involving improved management of a forest at a birds of prey sanctuary in their state.
Ecommerce store operators tell us that their customers particularly enjoy that feature. They like feeling a personal connection with such efforts to combat climate change and make the world a better place.
Our portfolio also includes many other types of projects. They might involve wind or solar energy, for example, or reforestation, or destruction of ozone-depleting substances, or increased energy efficiency, or capture of greenhouse-gas emissions from landfills, abandoned mines, or livestock farms.
And, very soon, we'll have a BigCommerce app. Stay tuned. If you have a question, please reach out through our Contact Us page, and we'll get right back to you.
