We're trying to do our part by making RECs and carbon offsets available for ecommerce deliveries and other everyday activities that carry a carbon footprint. We match the carbon offsets and RECs that we have as closely as possible to the destination of each delivery. (You can get details about that process here, and learn about Cloverly in general here.)

Carbon enters our atmosphere in many forms and from many sources. So we have amassed offsets and RECs from projects that address the issue in many ways. Here are some examples:

  • Solar and wind projects generate renewable energy without creating the carbon emissions that fossil-fuel plants produce.
  • Landfill and other solid waste projects capture methane, a potent greenhouse gas that's a byproduct of waste decomposition. Instead of letting it escape into the atmosphere, they use it to generate electricity.
  • Dairy farms use methane from cow manure to produce heat and electricity.
  • Abandoned coal mines are another methane source. Various projects capture the gas and use it as an energy source.
  • Trees pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for food, storing the carbon as wood. A variety of projects seek to gobble up carbon by planting trees on former forestland, creating new forests or improving management of current forests.
  • One way to reduce energy-related carbon emissions is to reduce the demand for energy itself. Some projects do that by improving energy efficiency among large organizations.
  • Refrigerants from air conditioners and refrigerators can act as greenhouse gases and damage the ozone layer. Several projects destroy those substances before they can reach the atmosphere.
