Carboneers closely partners with farming communities in the Global South to turn their agricultural waste into biochar.By creating biochar, they’re boosting the resiliency of soil and locking away carbon dioxide for over a thousand years — all while increasing the income of farmers in the Global South and helping them break the cycle of poverty.
Why biochar?
Droughts and heavy rainfall result in soil nutrient loss, lower crop yield, and take a significant hit on the revenue of smallholder farmers. Carboneers’ biochar projects tackle both these pressing issues: the fallout of the climate catastrophe and those who bear the brunt of it. Their biochar processes are also low-cost and locally managed. This makes them a great fit for locations with limited infrastructure and encourages robust partner participation.
Ghanaian Carboneers
In the Volta, Upper West, Savannah, and Northern regions of Ghana, Carboneers has partnered with 866 farming communities for a biochar project that’s removed 30K tons of CO2 and has achieved a 61% female employment rate0. Farmers have also financially benefited from these carbon credits. 7,188 farming households have earned additional income through biochar production in this project. All this revenue is delivered via mobile money transfers ensuring a secure and transparent financial system.
Indian Carboneers
Carboneers engaged 3,041 farming communities in Assam and Odisha, India for a biochar initiative that has sequestered 180K tons of CO2. Not only are they locking away carbon for thousands of years, but they’re working closely with local farming group NGOs to strengthen community bonds and empowering women as team members across all levels of the project. 52% of the leadership positions are held by women.
