Project Stories: Comunidad San Bernardino de Milpillas Chico & Ejido La Ciudad

Comunidad San Bernardino

Before the project's inception, the community managed its 153,065.87 hectares of land primarily through timber exploitation and reforestation activities. Despite having less than 20% degradation, the area faced threats from illegal logging, forest fires, pests, and unauthorized land-use changes. The community relied on traditional forest management practices, and there was a need for sustainable solutions to enhance carbon sequestration and improve local livelihoods.

The project aims to:

- Integrate the San Bernardino de Milpillas Chico community into the forest carbon markets.

- Promote sustainable forest management to mitigate climate change.

- Improve the quality of life for communal members and their families.

- Enhance biodiversity conservation and maintain ecological functions.

- Ensure equitable distribution of benefits among community members.

Ejido La Ciudad

Ejido La Cuidad encompasses
13,526.92 hectares of land that ejidatarios (communal landholders) have preserved over decades through sustainable forest management. Activities include reforestation, maintenance of reforested areas, creation of firebreaks, forest sanitation programs, and participation in payment for environmental services programs, which have helped conserve the ecological integrity of their ecosystems.

The project aims to:

- Develop restoration activities in degraded areas caused by natural processes like erosion or by forest fires and pests. Activities include plant production, reforestation, equipping fire and sanitation brigades, among others.

- Enhance teamwork among Ejido members, forestry technical service personnel, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to raise awareness among all involved parties about the value of natural resources in forest ecosystems as natural heritage and a source of well-being for society.
