mission

The Tierra Prieta Mission

Tierra Prieta is a Mexican company creating high quality biochar from waste pecan shells.

Project

Biochar for the planet and local community

Equipped with the largest industrial scale carbon removal facility in Mexico, Tierra Prieta's biochar locks carbon away for 100+ years, provides a broad range of benefits for the land and local community, and can be reliably delivered thanks to their 5-year full capacity sales agreement with Wonderchar, a US-based company.

Biochar as a soil amendment

Biochar is an effective soil amendment and Tierra Prieta provides it to farmers at an accessible price subsidized by income from carbon removal credits. Biochar allows them to improve overall soil fertility, reduce water and fertilizer use, and improve a crop’s resistance to prolonged water scarcity. Tierra Prieta’s biochar is also produced in flake form making it very easy to use with standard farming equipment.

Tierra Prieta’s work with the Parras community

Well-paying, non-seasonal work opportunities in Parras are very limited. Many of the job opportunities are in seasonal industries like tourism or agriculture and the manufacturing sector is on the decline. Tierra Prieta provides the local community with year-round opportunities that are hard to come by (and provide higher wages compared to regional manufacturing hubs).
