Why Orphan Wells?
Across the United States, there are an estimated one million orphaned oil and gas wells emitting substantial methane gas (which is 80x more potent than CO2). This methane gas is not only dangerous to the environment, but people too.VitalEco has plugged nine wells to date and has prevented over 700,000 CO2e tonnes of this harmful gas from entering the atmosphere, reducing environmental impact and contributing to community resilience.
How VitalEco saved a senior housing community from leaking methane
In 2022, an improperly sealed orphaned gas well was discovered to be emitting methane beneath a Franciscan Village senior housing community in Cleveland, Ohio. This put already vulnerable residents in an unsafe environment with poor air and water quality.VitalEco came in and in just 20 days, they were able to fully cement the well and permanently avoid 25, 947 metric tons of CO2e emissions. Not only did they safeguard the health of the residents in doing so, but they also created jobs in the local community.
How VitalEco saved one of the U.S’s most biologically diverse waterways
French Creek Valley Conservancy is a biological hotspot, a sanctuary for 80+ fish species and 4 National Audubon Society Important Bird Areas. Not to mention, it was also in close proximity to a neighborhood. But, in 2021, it was found to be venting methane from a well nearby, endangering everything around it.VitalEco put a stop to this. They plugged the well and eliminated 81,611 metric tons of CO2e emissions, ultimately preserving the natural biodiversity and safety of the local communities.
